Our dispatchers customize their Spillman screens in different ways.  Some of them customize the different colors for units “en route,” “arrived,” and other statuses.  I’ve customized it under my own logon to show the case number within the record ID column.  That’s helpful to streamline and save time.  Also, I like that I can choose to press a button or type a command within the command line in order to get the same screen.  I utilize shortcut keys to bring up certain commands such as the “add call” and “traffic stop” screens. I like the variation in being able to do different things. Sometimes it is easier for a user to do things via the keyboard, and sometimes with the mouse.

If we get a bomb threat, the call taker can take the bomb threat 911 information, run it through the 911 system to plot the location of the call. She then builds a call which is populated into the Spillman call screen and the dispatcher immediately knows where the location of that caller is. Recently, a caller called in a bomb threat to one of the schools. We were able to plot his location and make an arrest through the information we got through the 911 and the Spillman system. There is a concern about typing and driving at the same time. We use hot keys, just take one finger and push the F3 key, and that brings up my screen to run a license plate. It’s really easy then to just type in a license plate, hit enter, and it will run the plate for me. I can go back and forth using the hot keys, I can get back to the dispatch screen, I can hit F2 and run a name search. I can just toggle back and forth really easily. When I do get a response, all I need to do is hit the up or down arrow and read the information.

I’ll tell you what, I have to get statistics quickly, and I would end up trying to run stats for a basic neighborhood crime statistic request – like how much crime is in a neighborhood – and I used to have to run about seven different variables in our old system to give that person an honest answer of what the crime stats are. System Reliability

Another feature that comes to mind is that the Spillman system records when changes to a report or record are made.  In 2011, I answered a call on a 9-1-1 hang up welfare check, which turned out to be accidental.  It’s my policy to obtain the personal information from the parties involved and update the record with current and/or missing information.  Some time down the road, the father of this child had been involved in a fatal hit and run crash and our investigators had found a cell phone in the truck that matched the number from the phone number I had entered into Spillman from the 9-1-1 welfare check in 2011.  The prosecution is using the information from the change I made on the record in the prosecution of the case. One can see that tapping into the log detail can bring important pieces together to help win a case.  Many times, it’s the small stuff that makes the difference.

The Spillman products save us time and money in many different ways. Some of them are little, but they all add up, and some are big savings. The Instant Message feature is a small thing, but when you can send a message to an officer or a supervisor in a car, and not require them to come back to the station to get the message, or not write something up and leave it in their mailbox, and hope that they get it and act on it, that’s real important to me, and it’s a savings. It keeps the officers on the road.
