Uintah agency selects Spillman to protect residents, animals

VERNAL, Utah – Jan. 26, 2008 – In Uintah County, it's not just humans who need safeguarding. Rick Bell, director of the Uintah Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District, said that controlling pets and wild animals in this rural area is a full-time job.

We respond to anything that has to do with animals. I've had calls about bobcats on telephone poles, bears in the backyard, and moose and mountain lions in yards,” Bell said. We just had a cow on the loose that we had to tranquilize twice. She was so mean; she was going to eat us for lunch.”

Bell said his job became a little easier when the department adopted software from Spillman Technologies. Using Spillman's Mobile solution, Bell and fellow animal control officer are able to see calls on their vehicle laptops as dispatchers enter them into the Spillman system.

He said the ability to access information without calling dispatch or communicating through radio saves him valuable time.

We average 30 calls a day,” Bell said. Every time you can save a minute, it's great.”

The agency is located in eastern Utah's Uintah County. The county is home to natural resources like oil and mining, and hosts a growing population of approximately 27,000 residents.

Bell said that by using Spillman software he is able to quickly locate hard-to-find addresses on a map. Along with the area's population growth has come an increased number of residents who keep pit bulls as pets, Bell said. Time is of the essence, he said, especially when a potentially dangerous animal is on the loose.

Our area is growing so big and has so many new subdivisions that it is hard to keep up with all the new street names,” he said. With such a big influx of pit bull dogs, we need to be able to respond now, not spend time figuring out where to go,” he said.

Using Spillman's Law Records module, the agency can attach alerts to records in their agency database. The alerts will warn the animal control officers when a specific law incident record is tied to dangerous or wanted persons.

Uintah Animal Control and Shelter Special Service District is part of a shared system that includes the Uintah County Sheriff's Office and five other agencies in eastern Utah. With the Spillman system, animal control personnel can access a wide range information collected by agencies across the region.
