The Women of Spillman help Santa bring gifts to the elderly

The Women of Spillman is a group within Spillman Technologies devoted to professional development, and every year the group selects a charity for the company to support for the holidays. The Hazen Care Center and the Utah’s Health Care Association’s Music & Memory Program were chosen as this year’s charities.

The Hazen Care Center was identified by the Utah Health Care Association as a nursing home in need of assistance. Many of the residents at the center are on Medicaid and have only $45 a month to spend on necessities, and most have no family nearby. Additionally, the Music & Memory Program is a statewide initiative to bring music to those suffering from dementia and improving their quality of life.

Spillman's work at the Hazen Care Center

This year, the Women of Spillman coordinated a bake sale to raise funds to purchase necessities. Employees also participated in a contest among departments for needed basics for the residents of the Hazen Care Center: blankets, socks, slippers, small games, stuffed animals, and puzzles. Employees were also able to donate directly to the Music & Memory program with iTunes gift cards.

Thanks to the support of the Spillman employees and their families, the bake sale raised $650 for the charities, with a total of more than $900 being donated over the course of the month (including $100 in iTunes gift cards).

The Women of Spillman’s efforts paid off—thanks to the donations by employees, the group was able to check every item off of the wish list provided by the Hazen Care Center! All leftover funds went to purchase iPod Shuffles and gift cards for the Music and Memory program.

The Women of Spillman sort gifts

The Women of Spillman had the opportunity to help Santa distribute some of the gifts during the Hazen Care Center’s Christmas party. For those that were able to participate, it was truly a heartwarming and inspiring experience to be able to witness the childlike wonder of the residents visiting with Santa and receiving gifts. One resident had asked Santa for a puzzle and received one—and another took her slippers off right there to try on her new shoes from Santa.
